ABOUT BARB CARR
Designing work around the people doing it.
I'm based in Chicago, Illinois, where I write and speak about neurodiversity, psychological safety, and how we can design better work systems.
I've spent much of my career helping organizations understand why things go wrong at work. These days, I'm especially interested in how we can get more things right from the start by designing work around how people actually think, learn, and function.
I'm currently writing a book about neurodiversity and work, exploring what happens when we stop expecting everyone to work the same way and start questioning how work is designed.
And yes, I live in Chicago by choice, even in February.

What I Write and Speak About
Neurodiversity at Work
People think, learn, communicate, and process information differently. We can design work with those differences in mind.
Psychological Safety
People need room to ask questions, raise concerns, and talk about mistakes. The way work is organized can make that easier.
Human-Centered Work Design
Tasks, tools, procedures, communication, training, and workload all shape how people perform. Clearer systems help people do good work safely.
Safety and Incident Investigation
My safety background taught me to ask how the work system shaped an outcome, instead of stopping at the last action.
